The Montgomery County Council is considering a bill that would raise the county minimum wage to $15/hour. Unfortunately, the current version does not include tipped workers who receive a subminimum wage of only $4/hour!
With women making up nearly 60% of Montgomery County's tipped workers, the current system serves as a legal form of wage discrimination. Furthermore, 90% of women working as servers report being subject to sexual harassment from customers and even supervisors.
This two-tiered system puts workers at risk, perpetuates gender pay discrimination, and legalizes a substandard wage.
The evidence is clear. The Montgomery County Council should pass a strong minimum wage bill that includes all workers.
