Director of Organizing 

Location: Remote with travel throughout Maryland

Director of Organizing: The Director of Organizing takes responsibility for building a network of cohesive, effective, and relational member leaders and volunteers for the organization by managing our team of six region-based community organizers. The Director of Organizing oversees recruitment of new supporters and the development of volunteer member leaders who both a) identify with and support the mission of Progressive Maryland, and b) commit to power building for the world as it should be. Under the supervision of our Executive Director, the Director of Organizing develops basebuilding and electoral campaign strategies and leads the planning, execution, and debrief of grassroots outreach plans to further the ideologic and programmatic goals of the organization. The Director of Organizing also manages the execution of periodic grassroots fundraising and membership drives.

Responsibilities 

Supervise a team of 6 regional organizers and work with them to grow at least one Progressive Maryland chapter in their turf

Develop and implement basebuilding and leadership development plans for our local chapters

In coordination with the Campaigns Director, develop Progressive Maryland’s power-building methodology to be of the highest levels of rigor and impact and ensure that each member of your team is fully bought into and able to carry out our methodology

Ensure organizational base building and grassroots fundraising goals are met and tracked in a consistent and accurate fashion

Manage our candidate training and development program, the Maryland People’s Leadership Institute

Manage our organizing and leadership development trainings for members and staff

Qualifications 

Strong commitment to building grassroots power by organizing individuals to take collective action

Experience with managing teams of organizers on a social justice issue and/or progressive electoral campaign

  • Ability to design and run trainings covering basic community organizing skills
  • Experience building and implementing issue-based and electoral campaign plans that are driven by grassroots organizing and leadership development

Basic computer literacy and a willingness to quickly learn and use new digital platforms 

Ability to meet deadlines under pressure while handling multiple projects 

Ability to work independently, as a member of a team, and as a team lead 

● The ability to think, reflect, communicate, challenge the conventional wisdom, make judgments    in complicated situations, and show flexibility

Experience with Votebuilder/VAN and other campaign platforms

Salary, Benefits, and Position Details: Salary is commensurate with experience between $75,000-$80,000. Climate Policy Analyst 

Location: Maryland

Climate Policy Analyst: The Climate Policy Analyst is responsible for legislative analysis and bill drafting in support of our work to end environmental racism and eliminate sacrifice zones in Maryland. As our resident expert on all things climate policy, the Analyst will represent Progressive Maryland in coalition spaces and build relationships with allied organizations, elected officials, and other stakeholders. They will also educate our grassroots leaders, community organizers, and senior staff about policy questions and collaborate with our communications team on developing accurate and compelling messaging that will drive our membership base to take action with us on climate justice issues. Under the supervision of the Deputy Executive Director, the Analyst will develop winning legislative strategies to advance our environmental policies.

Responsibilities 

● Lead research and analysis of climate policy with a special focus on strategies to end environmental racism, eliminate sacrifice zones, and ensure a just transition to renewable energy sources

● Utilize both written material and presentations to brief Progressive Maryland colleagues and grassroots members and leaders on climate policy issues

● Collaborate with our communications team to develop messaging for social media, letters to the editor, and interviews with press

● Analyze and track pending climate legislation at the state and local levels

● With the support of the Deputy Executive Director, develop and implement strategies to advance our legislation

● Represent Progressive Maryland in coalition spaces with allies and other climate stakeholders

Qualifications 

● 3-5 years of professional experience in climate policy

● Strong written and verbal communication skills, an ability to translate policy issues to non-specialist audiences

● Strong attention to detail

● Ability to meet deadlines under pressure while handling multiple projects 

● Ability to work independently, as a member of a team with both internal and external partners, and a team lead 

● Basic computer literacy and a willingness to quickly learn and use new digital platforms

● The ability to think, reflect, communicate, challenge the conventional wisdom, make judgments in complicated situations, and show flexibility.

● Willingness to participate in occasional civic engagement activities such as canvassing, phone banking, and text banking during election years.

Baltimore City Organizer

Community Organizer Job Description 

Location: Baltimore City

Community Organizer: The Organizer will work to sustain and expand Progressive Maryland's organizing work in their region by developing the local PM chapter(s) and engaging community members in ongoing campaigns. They build an ongoing base of members, volunteers, and grassroots leaders who identify with and support the mission of Progressive Maryland and participate in statewide issue campaigns in solidarity with Progressive Maryland members from other chapters across the state. The Organizer also builds relationships with allied organizations, elected officials, and candidates for office in their region. Under the supervision of the Director of Organizing, the Organizer works in concert with our team of organizers across the state to execute grassroots power-building plans that further Progressive Maryland’s programmatic and electoral goals. 

Responsibilities 

● Build a base of members, volunteers, and grassroots leaders in Baltimore City

● Recruit, develop and train Progressive Maryland members to take positions of leadership within their local Progressive Maryland chapter and on statewide issue campaigns

● Mobilize our base to take action (turning out to events, submitting testimony during legislative session, signing petitions, etc.)

Senior Organizer, Seven Ten Black Worker Center 

Location: Prince George’s County, Maryland

Worker Center Organizer: The Organizer will work to develop a worker center program as a core component of the work of Progressive Maryland. The 7/10 Worker Center will focus particularly on the needs of Black workers as well as formerly-incarcerated people. The Organizer will build connections with employers in the region and tap into networks of service providers to connect justice-impacted individuals and other low wage Black workers with jobs and other supports they need to build a successful career. They will build a base of Black workers who are seeking to improve working conditions and develop them as grassroots leaders that will self-determine what their needs are and build power for policy reforms which will increase the availability of quality jobs and increased rights at work. In addition to this organizing work, the Organizer will work to hold events to educate workers on their rights and events that increase their job prospects. The Organizer also builds relationships with allied organizations, elected officials, and other stakeholders. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Organizer works in concert with our team of organizers across the state to execute grassroots power-building plans that further Progressive Maryland’s programmatic and electoral goals.

Responsibilities 

● Build a base of Black workers that includes formerly-incarcerated workers, volunteers, and  other grassroots leaders

● Recruit, develop and train members to take positions of leadership within the worker center and to advocate for their rights

● With support from the Executive Director, collaborate with our formerly-incarcerated members to develop and implement campaigns to address the challenges and barriers they face in accessing high-quality employment.

Justice Reform Organizer

The Organizer collaborates with our team of regional organizers to build a statewide grassroots base supporting their issue from across Maryland as well as on meeting additional organizational programmatic and electoral goals. They also seek out and build partnerships with potential ally organizations.

Operations Specialist

Location: Maryland

Operations Specialist: The operations specialist will be a key part of Progressive Maryland, helping to implement the vision of the Executive Director and management team. The Operations Specialist will oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, including human resources, event planning, scheduling, and budgeting. This position reports to the Deputy Executive Director.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the logistical aspects of the hiring process such as creating job descriptions and posting them online, setting up interviews with candidates, conducting reference checks, and other similar tasks
  • Onboard new staff to our digital platforms
  • Oversee office management and manage office supplies
  • Ensure compliance with operational policies
  • Foster teambuilding among staff by arranging group activities to cultivate a healthy organizational culture
  • Track departmental spending and ensure it falls in line with budget, provide monthly updates to management team on departmental spending
  • Schedule, confirm attendance, prepare digital and/or printed materials, create agendas, and take and distribute notes for key organizational meetings
  • Maintain accurate contact information for our members
  • Manage logistics for major organizational events such as our annual Membership Assembly, Board and staff retreats, fundraisers, etc.
  • Assist the Development and Organizing teams with processing donations, ensure donors receive appropriate documentation for tax deductions
  • Organize Shared Google Drive
  • Create and maintain an organized system for our database.
  • Liaise with external vendors
  • During the annual legislative session, track the filing and status of bills and hearing dates
