The Progressive Maryland Environmental Justice Task Force (EJTF) is proudly committed to creating a more equitable and thriving world. As fervent believers in the power of community, we understand that our planet's vitality is intertwined with the well-being of its people, especially those who've historically been marginalized. At the Environmental Justice Task Force, we embrace our dual responsibility— to Mother Earth and to every soul whose voice has been stifled by disparity.
We act, not merely as environmentalists, but as enthusiasts of change, driven by a passion to inform and unite all communities. We exist to uplift the voices of working people of color, and battle the forces of white supremacy and Environmental Racism. We work to ensure that the voices of disparate people are not just heard, but amplified and echoed in the chambers of decision-making. Their stories, dreams, and aspirations paint the vivid tapestry of our movement.
The PMD EJTF believes our journey is not just about preserving the earth; it’s about reimagining a world where every leaf, stream, mountain, and soul can coexist in harmony and prosperity.
Equity: Promote the equitable distribution of environmental benefits and burdens: Ensure that all communities, regardless of race or socio-economic status, have access to clean air, water, and healthy food. The EJTF should work to identify communities that have been historically disadvantaged and disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution and work towards mitigating the damage.
Power Building: We will center the leadership of frontline community members that have had to face the worst consequences of environmental degradation at the hands of big corporations. From this long term people-power will be actualized which will be leveraged to win environmental justice campaigns across the state of Maryland.
Empowerment: Increase public participation in environmental decision-making: Engage community members in the development and implementation of environmental policies, programs, and projects. This can be achieved through community meetings, public hearings, and outreach campaigns, among other strategies.
Advocacy: Promote sustainable development: Encourage environmentally friendly development that minimizes the use of natural resources, reduces waste and pollution, and promotes renewable energy. The EJTF should work with government agencies and private sector partners to promote sustainable practices in all areas of development.
Collaboration: Build strong partnerships with progressive organizations: Collaborate with grassroots organizations, faith-based groups, and other stakeholders to build a broad-based coalition that can advocate for environmental justice issues. These partnerships should be built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared vision for a cleaner and more just environment.
Communication: Increase environmental awareness and education: Increase public understanding of environmental issues and their impact on human health, social well-being, and economic prosperity. The task force should develop and promote educational materials, workshops, and other outreach programs that inform the public about the importance of environmental justice and inspire them to take action.
Our vision is grand but clear
A world where the beauty of our environment mirrors the inclusivity and justice of its inhabitants. A place where working people of color are not just survivors but thriving stewards of the land they call home.
We are committed to increasing public awareness, education, and participation in environmental decision-making, centering working-class communities of color in everything we do.
We invite you, with open arms and hopeful hearts, to join us on this transformative journey. Together, we can craft a brighter, more equitable future, where every breath of fresh air is a testament to our shared commitment and enduring spirit.
**For the Earth. For Justice. For Us.**
