The Olympics wrapped up yesterday, and the USA topped the medal count once again! Maryland played a huge role, with 18 athletes competing in the Paris Games, and half of them bringing home medals. Maryland will have even more athletes competing at the Paralympic Games later this month. Now, it’s time to channel that winning energy into our own high-stakes race with the upcoming general election. With the Vice President officially selecting Tim Walz, the most progressive of her potential running mates, things are heating up on the national stage. But our work doesn't stop there.

That’s why this Thursday, August 15th, we’re hosting a huge virtual election campaign launch to bring together progressives from across the state. We’ll discuss our strategies, activities, and tactics for the upcoming election, and explore how everyone can get involved. Defending Democracy Campaign Launch This Week!

This Thursday, we're hosting our Virtual Election Campaign Launch, where progressives from across Maryland will come together to strategize, organize, and take immediate action. During the event, we'll be making calls to potential voters, discussing key tactics for the upcoming races, and hearing from special guest Delegate Tiffany Alston. This is your chance to get involved and make a real impact.

Healthcare Justice Campaign: We need your voice this August! 

 

🗣️ We’ve been invited to participate in a state work group that’s coming up with recommendations on how health insurers can make it easier and to appeal care and claim denials. To be clear, we think that they should reduce denials and let us use our health policies to get the care we need!  But as a next step on the path to reform, let’s use this opportunity to make the process work for patients. Fill out this short survey.

 

🗣️ Last month we celebrated the anniversary of Medicare and we’ll mark the 88th anniversary of Social Security this Wednesday, August 14th!  The future of Medicare and Social Security are on the ballot this November. This is not an exaggeration! Let’s be sure that voters know that’s the case and that they know the truth about how we can protect and strengthen these vital public programs. Learn more next Wednesday evening, August 21st, at a free in-person forum that will address the Facts and Fiction about Medicare and Social Security in Montgomery County. Environmental Justice Task Force: EJTF New Member Meeting Rescheduled

 

The Environmental Justice Task Force new member meeting was rescheduled to Saturday, August 31st, from 3p-4:30p, at Enoch Pratt Library Cherry Hill Branch (606 Cherry Hill rd). As previously mentioned, the EJTF’s campaign accomplishments, stories from frontline leaders, and pathway to victory on the issues undermining the health and well being of EJ communities in South Baltimore will be unveiled. If you’re interested in attending, register here.

 

Meanwhile, over the next few months, leading up to the November election, the EJTF will be hitting the pavement to help Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks secure a victory in her current race against former Governor Larry Hogan for a U.S Senate seat. She currently leads Hogan by double digits in the polls--this race will decide which party takes control of the senate chamber on the hill.

 

Come rain or shine, EJTF leaders will be out on doors for its first day of Action on Sunday, September 29th, which will include door knocking shifts from 10a-7p. If you would like to plug in with the EJTF and help earn more votes for Angela, register here.
 

PM Local Chapter Updates

Baltimore City

Last Saturday the Sandtown-Winchester Neighborhood Union, our local Progressive Maryland chapter in West Baltimore, held a Campaign Launch and Block Party at the Sandtown Resurrection Church on 2304 Pennsylvania Ave to officially announce the beginning of our campaign to get all of Sandtown to vote NO against two ballot questions backed by big corporate money: One that seeks to further strip our city's residents from their say in politics as well as another which seeks to defund our public schools, public safety, parks and recreation, sanitation, and other essential services we rely on. 

 

Many of our neighbors and ally organizations such as fellow members of the Baltimore City is NOT for Sale Coalition AFT-Maryland and Baltimore Teachers Union, and local organizations such as Elev8 Baltimore, The Sandtown Community Collective, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, Tubman House, and Malaya Baltimore were present. 

 

At this Campaign Launch we held an election for our local Progressive Maryland leaders who will be in charge of fighting this campaign and steering the local chapter as well: Antoine Bennett was officially voted in as the Chair of the Sandtown-Winchester Neighborhood Union, with Stacey West as his Vice-Chair. 

 

It was an event full of tear-jerking and powerful testimonies, relationship-building, and great food and music where we almost doubled our membership size. The Renew Baltimore Coalition messed with the wrong people!

 

This week, the P.M. Sandtown-Winchester Neighborhood Union will be tabling at the National Night Out event at the 500 Block of Islamic Way @ 5pm on Tuesday, as well as speaking at the Sandtown Resurrection Church Back-to-School event at @ 1:30pm on Saturday. We hope to see you there!

South Prince George’s County 

PEPCO made 2 billion in profits last year, while our schools struggled to provide basic school supplies and teacher compensation. We are taking BACK those profits for us through solar panel opportunities.The school board just needs to APPLY for them.

MaCo at the beach; money comes in, money goes out; heat protections crawl to finish

Despite a two-week hiatus for Progressive News You Can Use, things just kept on chugging along in Maryland, in the other states, and at the federal level (though it looks as though Congress has given up on even the appearance of being effective). So there is lots to catch up on, including the Ocean City meeting of local and state government folks at the Maryland Association of Counties (MaCo) annual conference. They hope to solve some persistent budget problems. Our workers worry about budget problems, of course, but also surviving the hot weather as heat protections for workers are crawling to a conclusion after long wrangling. So there is plenty here to churn through, and every shred of this is important, take out word for it. It's Progressive News You Can Use from (who else?) Progressive Maryland.
