Healthcare Justice: Medicare Anniversary Events

Progressive Maryland celebrated the 61st Anniversary of Medicare at four local Congressional offices last Thursday, July 30th, part of a national day of action organized by National Nurses United at 100 offices across the country! We were thrilled to have our healthcare leaders and staff joined by our friends from DSA, PNHP, JUFJ and NNU at the office visits our volunteers organized in Baltimore, Rockville, Towson and Frederick.

At Rep. Mume’s, Raskin’s and Delaney’s offices we delivered a message of thanks to them for co-sponsoring the Medicare For All Act (HR 3069) in Congress. And we urged them to get much more vocal and visible in their support!

We need more Democrats to sponsor the bill. Medicare For All is the only truly meaningful and game changing reform that can move us away from the fractured, inadequate, expensive, profit-driven, corrupt healthcare system that is failing millions of everyday Americans. More than 330 labor, faith, health, civil rights, academic, women’s, and community groups recently signed on to a letter calling for Members of Congress to get behind the Act. 

On Thursday, constituents also visited the local office of Rep.Johnny O and called on him to become a sponsor. Please reinforce the message to him – email or call him today:

In Memoriam Of Phil Ateto

Members of Progressive Maryland’s Healthcare Task Force, along with many other friends, family, and fellow organizers, are grieving the loss of Phil Ateto, who died July 26, after a long struggle with cancer. 

Phil was a trouble-maker, and one of the many things he caused trouble about was the disastrous state of healthcare in the US. Phil was a long-time advocate and activist for Medicare for All. 

Phil caused good trouble on many fronts on the local, state and national level. He took on corporate power, and he often lovingly challenged friends and allies to get out of their safe zones, and speak up against wrong-doing and oppression. 

During his last few months and weeks, Phil continued to be politically engaged, showing up at demonstrations against ICE detention centers, and at rallies to support the Palestinian people. He joined us in April at the Everyone Deserves Health Care Town Hall we organized with Wala Blegay.  And on Primary Election day he volunteered at a poll for Wala, a champion for Medicare For All who was endorsed by groups like Progressive Maryland, NNU, and Our Revolution.   

Phil was deeply loved, and is sadly missed.

Environmental Justice: Stop the BGE Rate Hike Rally

Join us and our coalition partners on Tuesday, August 11, at 10:00 a.m. outside BGE Headquarters in Baltimore as we rally ahead of the Public Service Commission's first hearing on BGE's proposed $156 million electric rate hike.

Marylanders shouldn't have to choose between paying their utility bills and paying for groceries, rent, or medicine while utility companies continue to seek higher profits. Together, we'll call on regulators to reject this latest rate hike and put people before corporate profits. Following the rally, attendees are invited to walk with us to the Public Service Commission hearing to make our voices heard.

Big redistricting effort focused on Assembly special Session; world continues to operate outside Annapolis -- it's News You Can Use

Yes, the effort to make Maryland liberal-business-friendly Dem from Eastern Shore to Allegheny West is under way (wishing them luck) but as we observe, other events inside and outside the state are noteworthy too -- 38 deaths from excessively hot weather in Maryland, surpassing all of last year by the beginning of August, while cyclosporia and measles continue to lurk, veiled behind news of the first West Nile case of the year. Our Gov takes over as chair of the National Governors Association, apparently pursued by a defamation suit from the Baltimore Sun's Trumpy owner. In news from the wider world, our readers might take extra steps to avoid needing a transfusion as the national blood supply reaches crisis level, and the Trump administration, irritated by all those citizens and NGOs winning suits to stop Trumpworld environmental despoliation or arrant neglect, asks a court to wipe out the Congressionally approved citizen-remedy opportunities written into the environmental protection acts of the good old days -- to protect from executive-branch malfeasance.
