Healthcare Justice Campaign: The Health Crisis That Insurers are Creating by Denying Care and Claims

The public outcry about health insurance company practices continues to grow after the fatal shooting of United Healthcare’s CEO. Progressive Maryland condemns all acts of gun violence. Our affiliate, People’s Action, released this press statement last week.

This event shines a light on a systemic issue that impacts millions of Americans every day—the prioritization of corporate profits over people. Health insurance companies wield immense power over the lives of those they are supposed to serve. There has been a troubling trend in recent years of insurers using that power to increase the rate of denials and delays. These decisions often leave families in crisis, struggling when they need support the most. Progressive Maryland organizes and advocates for a healthcare system that provides healthcare to people when and where they need it. Environmental Justice: Diana Emerson to Speak at Final EJTF Event

We are 6 days away from Progressive Maryland’s Environmental Justice Task Force’s final event of the year: Saturday, December 14, 2:30p-4:30p, at the Enoch Pratt Library Cherry Hill Branch (606 Cherry Hill Rd, Baltimore, MD 21225). Given the anticipation of the upcoming legislative session and Senate President Bill Ferguson’s unadulterated support of the Reclaim Renewable Energy Act (RREA) of 2025, frontline community members are energized and looking forward to learning how they can support the RREA once it's released in the upcoming legislative session in early January. 

Diana Emerson, a Baltimore City Democratic State Central Committee member, community advocate, and proud new member of Progressive Maryland, will be a featured speaker at the event. Through her heartfelt speech, she hopes to inspire South Baltimore community members to take action with the EJTF in Annapolis to push the RREA across the finish line. EJTF leaders will also demonstrate how to talk to legislators and present written and oral testimony in support of the RREA.

News You Can Use: Still More State and Local Action to Keep TrumpWorld at Bay

How Trump managed to act like the president when he is more than a month from being inaugurated is a puzzlement but reflects his particular talent for the spectacle, patched together from reality shows and Hitler-like rally scenes. As he piles up a collection of rich butt-kissers to populate his entourage -- er, administration -- more of the rest of us are calculating how far to burrow in to avoid his first swings at his imagined Deep State. We hope we can stop writing headlines like this one eventually, but alas not yet.

In Maryland, as you will see in the Memo, Progressive Maryland and allied groups are mounting their own campaigns to enable our working families to shake off the worst of the Marmalade Man. We are lucky in Maryland but have to watch our step with an economy well supported by about 150,000 federal employees. They are all watching their backs and we need to help them; a well-managed combination of policy and governance depends on them and, soon, may be even more the difference between bad and worse for all of us. Tough reading sometimes, but it’s all News You Can Use.
