Just months after Marylanders successfully fought to pass the Community Trust Act—a major victory to help build trust between immigrant communities and local government—the Trump administration is now suing Maryland in an attempt to undermine those protections. They’re also suing over policies that offer undocumented students in-state tuition at public colleges. It's another reminder that every step forward for our communities is met with attempts to pull us backward. But we've faced these challenges before, and we know that organizing is how we win.

That's why our healthcare movement is also stepping up this week. On Wednesday, members of our Healthcare Task Force will head to Capitol Hill for the Congressional Progressive Caucus' Medicare for All hearing before meeting with Senator Angela Alsobrooks and Congressman Johnny Olszewski to continue urging them to support Medicare for All. As healthcare costs continue to rise and families struggle to afford the care they need, we're keeping the pressure on our federal leaders to put people over insurance company profits.

At the same time, we're looking ahead to November. Progressive Maryland has made new endorsements in this year's General Election, and we're excited to support candidates who will fight for working families, affordable housing, climate justice, healthcare, and a stronger democracy.

Healthcare Justice: Congressional Hearing for Medicare For All! 

On Wednesday, July 22nd, Representatives Jayapal and Dingell are hosting a Congressional Progressive Caucus Shadow Hearing on Medicare for All! The hearing is from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. and will feature CPC Members, leaders from national groups that are organizing for the healthcare reform this country needs and that Medicare For All can deliver. Medicare For All is enjoying record levels of public support here in Maryland and across the country. But we need to keep pushing and demanding that candidates and elected officials pledge their support.   

During the shadow hearing, Members will hear from expert witnesses on the transformative change that Medicare for All will bring to the American healthcare system: guaranteeing universal healthcare while lowering healthcare costs for patients, decreasing administrative burden for healthcare providers, reducing financial costs for employee health plans for businesses, and more. The hearing will also provide an opportunity to discuss positive incremental proposals that can help the country transition to Medicare for all, including expanding benefits, lowering the eligibility age, and establishing an out of pocket cap.

Maryland shakes off heat and smoke, faces Trump admin suits for doing right things -- it's News You Can Use

We can breathe again. At least, many of us. The maxxheat and the smoke from our northern neighbors have long-term effects on everyone and we need to watch for long-term effects in particular in our neighbors with chronic conditions.

Speaking of a chronic condition: Fresh from his pathetic attempt on Sunday to edge into the aura of Spain's World Cup championship, Trump announces (surprise!) that "full-scale war" against Iran is on the menu for dizzied gas and diesel customers (and the retailers who must pay more for deliveries). Not much chance of escaping inflationary pressure no matter where you live, but Blue states like Maryland can expect more of the Trump gang's assaults, legal and otherwise, as dwindling MAGA flails for some traction against disaster in the midterm elections. Nevertheless they can't find their agenda with both hands, sending ICE goons out on traffic stops again (Trump's brilliant reversal of his newby DHS director Markwayne Mullin, who saw the risks in every pull-over). And, as we report below, FBI agents appear to be off the task of investigating ICE injuries and deaths to civilians. Convenient.
