Yesterday marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through October 15th. It’s a time to celebrate the rich contributions of Hispanic communities to our country, but also to reflect on the challenges they continue to face. Here at Progressive Maryland, we are committed to fighting for the rights of all people, including Hispanic communities. This November, the stakes are high, with right-wing politicians making it clear they’re targeting Hispanic communities with harmful policies. That’s why we need to ensure that everyone we know gets out to vote this election.

We’re also just 10 days away from our Annual Gala on September 26th, and tickets are selling fast! We’d love to see you there for a night of inspiration, networking, and progress. Special shoutout to our amazing sponsors: 1199 SEIU, People's Action, the Montgomery County Education Association, the Maryland National Organization for Women and the Office of Councilmember Will Jawando. You can buy your tickets here and join us for this unforgettable event.

In other news, our Executive Director Larry Stafford Jr. will be speaking with Jamilla Woods on WPFW 89.3 FM about the recent state budget cuts and how they will impact funding for child care and Medicaid. Listen live here or tune in directly to WPFW 89.3 FM on Tuesday, September 17 at 11am to catch the conversation. You can also access the show after it airs here.

Task Forces & Issue Campaigns Updates:

Healthcare Justice Campaign:

This Week

➜ Sign Up for the National Virtual Teach-In on Medicare Advantage September 25th

➜Take the survey: making it easier to appeal denials

Our COC campaign pushes for state measures to crack down on the frequency of insurance care and claim denials. In the meantime, Progressive Maryland is part of a state convened work group looking at ways to make it easier to appeal denials. Take the survey to help us make recommendations to the work group.

Another major reform we need to pass is an end to the profiteering private insurers are doing with Medicare Advantage plans. A new campaign has launched to demand that the President and Congress step in to end the overpayments and the fraud (carrieres have started adding bogus illnesses to people’s charts for diseases they’re not being treated for but insurers are getting reimbursed!) Our public dollars should be used to strengthen and expand Medicare, NOT to line the pockets of CEOs and stockholders!

Environmental Justice New location: EJTF New Member Meeting in Brooklyn

.

Last Saturday, EJTF leaders Mikal Rashid, Zack Buster, and Theo Thompson joined an energetic all-day Victory Captains training at the Baltimore Teachers Union to prepare for our first day of action—Sunday, September 29th (register here). Leaders learned cogent recruitment and canvassing practices.

After much anticipation with the support of Councilwoman Phylicia Porter of District 10 in South Baltimore, the Environmental Justice Task Force, was able to secure a space at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore, Brooklyn O’Malley Club for a EJTF new member meeting next Friday, September 27, 6p-8p.

As mentioned in a previous blurb, frontline community members will share their story of self and what made them take action to save themselves from big polluters. Additionally, the EJTF’s pathway to victory over environmental racism will be unveiled. If you'd like to join register here. Big shout to all the EJTF leaders in helping make our day of action training for candidate Angela Alsobrooks a success.

Under Threat: Countering David Smith’s Ballot Initiatives

David Smith, chairman of Sinclair Broadcasting, is supporting ballot initiatives that seek to diminish Black political power in Baltimore. This is part of a larger right-wing attack on the progress made in criminal justice reform, reparations, community-based violence prevention, and other progressive policy measures.

This discussion will provide the audience with more information about these ballot initiatives and the work being done to fight them.

Trying to keep the Chesapeake clean, and other DMV news -- (nearly) all the News You Can Use

How to improve the Chesapeake Bay (and the complex forces, human, social and natural, involved) ties in with events like the Curtis Bay coal dust problem, enviro solutions like more bike-and-walk ways to get to work, the sudden closing of Atlantic Beaches, and on the political front big-time worries among state elections officials about whether the USPS mail system is being strangled (and mail voting endangered) by USPS's cost-obsessed (and Trump-appointed) Postmaster General. Ben Franklin, he ain't…
