As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the generations of Hispanic and Latinx people across the world and right here in Maryland whose families, cultures, histories, and communities have helped shape the places we call home.

We celebrate the Latinx and Afro-Latinx Marylanders who are building businesses and raising families, teaching and caring for their neighbors, creating art and culture, and contributing every day to the strength and vibrancy of our state. We celebrate communities that have carried traditions across borders and generations while making Maryland their home.

At Progressive Maryland, we are especially grateful for the incredible Latinx-led organizations we are proud to work alongside, including CASA In Action, whose steadfast advocacy and dedication to protecting working families continues to strengthen our movement. Their organizing reminds us that when people come together across communities, we can build the power to demand dignity, opportunity, and a government that works for everyone.

But celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month also means recognizing the challenges facing Latino families right now, and recommitting ourselves to fighting back. Across Maryland and the country, immigrant communities are facing fear, separation, and the threat of violence and detention. Families have been torn apart, and communities have been forced to organize and protect one another in the face of ICE enforcement.

We will continue to stand with our immigrant neighbors and show up for our communities under attack. We will continue coming together to demand that we be treated with dignity and that violence in any form is not accepted. We will keep organizing, because our communities deserve better - and because giving up is simply not an option.

SĂ se puede.

In solidarity,
The Progressive Maryland Team

Big Week for Health Care Justice!

PMD shows Solidarity with Nurses at Saturday’s Franklin Square Rally!

Members of Progressive Maryland’s Healthcare Task Force joined the more than two hundred registered nurses and supportive community members at a rally on Saturday at MedStar’s Franklin Square Hospital in Northeast Baltimore. It was good to see elected officials on hand to show their support, too.

The nurses spoke out against unsafe staffing levels, supply shortages and the hospital’s  expensive contracts with union busting consultants. The rally took place after National Nurses United, filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on September 10, to hold union elections at the hospital.

Folks at the rally also got to hear the breaking news that nurses at Saint Agnes Ascension Hospital had just voted to ratify their first-ever collective bargaining agreement. “We won a grievance procedure, a pay scale, and much more. As nurses, we now have a voice to advocate for safe staffing so that our patients get the best care,” Robin Buckner, a union leader and RN at St. Agnes said.

Medicare For All Gains Two New Congressional Co-Sponsors!

The Medicare For All Act which will improve and expand traditional Medicare to create a  patient centered truly universal health system in the U.S. keeps gaining!

Two Congressional Black Caucus members, Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-OR) and Rep. Everton Blair, Jr. (D-GA) just cosponsored the bill, bringing the number of cosponsors in the House of Representatives to 116!  Blair won a special election in August. Rep. Bynum is from Oregon and is a member of the centrist New Dem caucus. Oregon’s health care system is close to collapsing from federal health care funding cuts and corporate greed. Join us in thanking them by boosting this post!

Costs rising in long-term care, housing -- solutions pursued, but all costs are rising

Events from Annapolis to Maryland's counties, to cop shops and medical examiners, to Trump's bizarre reset on Bay restoration, all jostle here with news from other states (yep, data center concerns are up front). And the related notion of artificial-intelligence safety seethes in pre-summit US-China backroom mutterings -- plus we have People's Action's weekly report on skulduggery in D.C., even when half the Congress has adjourned for desperate attempts to campaign at home in the face of really bad polls for the GOP. All this plus rabid raccoons and bats. We have all the News You Can Use, so dig in.
