As a racial, social, economic and environmental justice organization, Progressive Maryland has always and will continue to center Black and Brown working families in our organizing work. As we stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protests, we are ramping up our work with the Movement for Black Lives.

We have been actively building power to address policing and systematic racism in Maryland. Over 400 people attended our statewide conversation on racial justice and strategy meeting on how to move from protest to policy. Since then, participants have been working with the PM Team to build a Statewide Justice Task Force that’s advancing our demands for racial justice. In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, we have created new paths to building power and awareness across the issues.

We need your help. Join our movement to end racism in Maryland.

Membership in a statewide, multi-issue social justice movement helps you and your community to create a sustainable, increasingly powerful presence as our chapters grow statewide. Local and state issues are meshed in effective combined action.

Progressive Maryland plans to:black_lives_matter.jpg

  • Demand the immediate overturn of Gov. Hogan’s veto of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and funding to Historically Black Colleges and Universities in our state in support of Black students who have historically been oppressed for generations.
  • Fight to replace the Law Enforcement Officer’s Bill of Rights in our Code of Public Safety with a legal system that requires transparency and protects the public from state violence and corruption.
  • Push for statewide divestment from police departments and an investment into Maryland’s Black communities instead, including robust funding for re-entry programs for those returning from incarceration and the creation of municipal programs to dispatch trained mental health care practitioners instead of police officers on 911 calls that involve mental health emergencies.
  • Advance the policies to end the criminalization and mass incarceration of Black people that comes as a result of targeted police tactics, starting with ending the war on drugs by supporting harm reduction policies and decriminalization. In the grip of the pandemic, decarceration is mandatory to prevent needless deaths and sickness.

There is no path to social justice for all that does not include ending the war on Black people and funding Black futures.

We encourage you to join us as a Member because membership allows you to increase your participation with us and your contribution allows us to continue our statewide organizing work.

Thank you in advance for supporting Black communities across our state.
