Progressive Maryland is calling for Harford County Delegate Mary Ann Lisanti to resign or be expelled following both an allegation of racist speech and her tone deaf statements after the revelation of the original incident.
Lisanti has lost her ability to credibly represent the people of her district and make policy for all Marylanders. Anyone who disrespects African Americans -- as she clearly does -- has no business serving in the Maryland General Assembly.
Issues pending before the Maryland General Assembly have serious implications for people of color. Based on her comments, Lisanti shouldn’t vote on these measures.137 signaturesAdd signature

Beth Landry signed Rep. Andy Harris MUST VOTE NO to healthcare cuts - and YES to Reauthorize CHIP! 2017-08-14 13:37:28 -040037 signatures
The Eastern Shore’s Rep. Andy Harris, a physician, is supposed to carry the admonition “first do no harm” everywhere he goes. When he goes back to the House of Representatives he should suit action to those words and vote to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program with no cuts in funding.
Here at the Maryland for Guaranteed Healthcare campaign and Progressive Maryland, we are horrified by the 23 million people tossed off health care by the (stalled) US House version of a substitute for the Affordable Care Act. CHIP is an important adjunct to Medicaid, which serves 37 million children. The Kaiser Family Foundation depicts four in ten children’s medical care depending on Medicaid and CHIP. According to Medicaid.gov, "as of May 2017, Maryland has enrolled 1,296,694 individuals in Medicaid and CHIP — a net increase of 51.43% since the first Marketplace Open Enrollment Period and related Medicaid program changes in October 2013."
Tell Andy Harris that his Congressional District 1 constituents, and people throughout Maryland, want CHIP reauthorized with NO funding cuts in September.
Andy Harris voted to reauthorize CHIP in 2015 the last time re-authorization was on the line. Nothing has changed except Trump’s destabilizing threats to the well-being of millions and an even more dangerous medical care landscape for hard-working low-income families for whom Medicaid is a lifeline.
Their children shouldn’t suffer. Andy Harris shouldn’t go along with the Trump-Ryan plan to loot our basic protections so as to cut taxes for millionaires.
Reauthorize CHIP with FULL funding. Sign to tell him that!
Beth Landry signed Petition: Fight for Medicare TODAY, so we can have Medicare for ALL TOMORROW! 2017-08-01 18:38:29 -0400106 signatures
Many proposals are being put forward on both sides of the aisle, some with better intentions than others. The Maryland for Guaranteed Healthcare campaign is just that - a campaign for guaranteed healthcare. With the strides the ACA has done to improve the healthcare system, there will still remain 30 million Americans uninsured, with many who have insurance still not having needed medical coverage and care.
In the immediate short-term, our advocacy has been concentrated heavily on preventing up to 23 million Americans from having their medical coverage taken away. Millions of people in our nation rely with their lives on services provided by Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP. We are demanding our elected officials such as Governor Hogan, Representative Andy Harris, and others to not only oppose ANY healthcare cuts for Maryland, as well as to take a leading position that everyone deserves healthcare and supporting policy solutions that make that goal a reality. By fighting for Medicare (and all federal programs of equal importance) today, we are retaining the system that will help us fight for Medicare for ALL, tomorrow.
In her Letter to the Editor to Delmarva Now, Vice President of the Lower Shore Progressive Caucus Whitney Palmer writes,
"Throughout the state, Marylanders have benefited from Medicaid expansion; conservative numbers state 291,000 individuals have gained coverage — and the majority live in rural areas. Our health care system has high administrative costs and the cost of care is set by profit motives. Insurance and pharmaceutical companies prioritize corporate profits over the health of Americans — and treat health care as a commodity.Health care is a human right and moral issue, not a commodity. Our goal should be to provide more and higher quality care to Americans, especially access to mental health services. We at Progressive Maryland believe that should take the form of a single-payer, Medicare-for-all system. A single-payer system will result in savings of [hundreds of billions of dollars annually].
When physicians can focus on people’s health instead of bureaucracy or creating a plan based on a person’s ability to pay, they can address health needs and prioritize prevention. Additionally, people will no longer declare bankruptcy because of medical bills. Fewer people will die.
It is time for the United States to prioritize people over profits and join the rest of the world with Medicare for All."
