Â
This morning, the Supreme Court made the horrifying decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending 50 years of federal abortion rights. We are absolutely heartbroken 💔. And we are angry.
This shameful and devastating decision will fall hardest on those who cannot afford expenses such as travel, lost wages, and out of pocket fees to access the care they need to receive a safe abortion. The ruling will undermine and could criminalize healthcare providers and people who can become pregnant. It is a direct attack on people of color, LGBTQ people, immigrants, teenagers, mothers, everyone seeking abortion services.Â
If you or a loved one are in a state where abortions are unattainable, if you’re an abortion provider, or if you’ve had or are considering an abortion, we feel for you 💛.
Here in Maryland, things are better than they are in many states but we have some elected officials (including anti-choice Democrats!) who have been standing by for too long while a well-funded right-wing movement has pushed to take away our reproductive rights. Those officials opposed expansion of abortion services in Maryland this year, and they have done little to nothing to support the range of reproductive health services Marylanders need.
Enough is enough. We will not stand by while judges, Governors, and legislators try to control our bodies. Progressive Maryland is committed to protecting our rights to safe abortions, birth control, and gender-affirming care. We’re also committed to electing progressive candidates who will make these issues a top priority.Â
If you can’t make a monetary contribution, we understand. You can also make a difference by volunteering your time to our elections team to work directly with progressive candidates. Together, let’s turn our anger into action and make Maryland a safe state for abortion care.
Â
Yours In The Fight,
Jennifer Mendes Dwyer
Deputy Executive Director of Progressive Maryland
